Vintage Horror Flick by Katzilla13 Vintage Horror Flick by Katzilla13
I can't remember any good old 50's horror flick featuring a praying mantis. Why not, they are some of the coolest insects, I think? There were ants, bees, spiders, etc., etc.... but no praying mantis. :-(

This shot made me think of Nosferatu even before I read your title. Very cool!

Yup, that was what I was thinking of, as well, when I worked on it. There is something eerie and fascinating to praying mantisses, I think.

Agreed (about the creepiness and fascination). And if you were going for Nosferatu, I'd say you definitely nailed it :)

Same here. They're certainly the most bizarre and predatory insects.

I dunno ..... I think the name is perfect. Now that the conductor thing was mentioned I can see that too and it does in fact look very much like a conductor. But it is your shot ... and it is an excellent one with a perfect title :D

Thank you. I can see the conductor-thing, too, but since I've been such a big movie buff from when I was little and adored all the monster-movies of the 50's, that connection was what rang my bell. It seemed to me like one of those classical "stalking images", like the werewolf or so. That's why I added the vinette, too, to emphasize on this effect.

yup ... I absolutely saw that right away (the horror thang). There's nothing wrong with having other people interpret it differently but it's your shot :]

No, I definitely like to hear different ideas, too. And like I said, I can see what he sees, as well, it's just that the movie-theme is so much stronger in my head (told ya - I'm slightly warped ;-)).

BTW: loved your comparison with the people at a Las Vegas "All-you-can-eat-Buffet", but for some reason, it won't let me comment. :-(

I don't think this name fits. It looks more like conductor here (the dude who direct orchestra).
The light also reminds the concert hall.
As for horrors I think people just not meet this insects so often and prefer to use some insects everyone knows.

I watched Animatrix few days ago. It appeared to be almost as good as Matrix itself but Renaissance episodes(2 episodes) was as good as Matrix itself and amazingly awesome, smart and disturbing. Highly recommend.
Just thinking inspiration by it might be even better than 50's horrors.
There is I think 9 episodes. All together lasts hour and half.

Thank you very much. I can see the conductor thing, too, but since I'm such a big movie-fan, this was the connection my - admittedly sometimes strange - brain coughed up first. :-) Thanks for letting me know about "Animatrix" for inspiration; I've never seen it, but perhaps I should. I just really didn't like part 2+3 of the Matrix-trilogy, they should have gone with the Highlander-line: "There can be only one". ;-)

Well. I did not liked 2,3 at first but half year ago some dude told me like "you know that little hindu girl Sati is a symbol of justice, love and sacrifice?"
I m like - "what??? :eyepopping:"
Then I start read about stuff in Matrix 2,3 that is not obvious but has meaning. After that I watched the movie on the whole new level and it was pretty awesome.
As one dude(actor playing one of the couincils) said - Matrix has 400 layers - lol!

So I recall there was Animatrix and I decide to watch it. Animatrix also has phylosophy and more obvious than Matrix 2,3 has. But still some not very well known symbols used there all over.

There is 9 shorts in it and 3 of them are super awesome and intense - Second Renassaine 1,2 and Matriculation.

Aha!! Kudos to you, I've always been a huge monster fan from when I could barely crawl, but I've never seen one with a praying mantis. So there is one, after all. Thank you! :-)

Thank you. That was in the aquarium (only the ground level has fish, the second level has reptiles and the third floor has amphibia and insects), where I got those tiny chameleons, too. I'm fascinated by praying mantisses, they are very bizarre, interesting critters.
